چکیده
Abstract This study examines siderite (FeCO 3 ) reactivity in MgCl 2 and MgSO 4 brines with varying salt concentrations (0.01M, 1M, 3M) at both acidic (pH ∼ pH ≤ 2) near-neutral 7) conditions. We measured aqueous Fe through time to determine dissolution rates characterized the solid reaction products scanning electron microscopy, dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy. Iron-based were equivalent 0.01M 1M slower 3M ; slow systematically increasing brine concentration for initial values. Fe-based could not be determined neutral experiments due precipitation of iron (hydr)oxide phases. After 1 day brines, abundant etch pits observed; however, experiments, was identified spectroscopy even after yr along a range Scanning microscopy imaging experiment found Mg-sulfate produced chaotic surface texture. Therefore, micron-scale textural observations used discriminate between alteration chloride sulfate brines. Initial release similar dilute but decreased by less than an order magnitude two highest-concentration experiments; therefore, siderite-bearing assemblages exposed fluids, regardless salinity, would likely dissolve completely over geologically short periods time, thus erasing other carbonate minerals from geologic record.

Evaporite deposits may represent significant sinks of mobile cations (e.g., those of Ca, N, Mg, and Fe) and anions (e.g., those of C, N, S, and Cl) among the materials composing the Martian surface and upper crust. Carbon and nitrogen are especially interesting because of their role as atmospheric gases which can become incorporated into crustal rocks. However, the nature of evaporite precursor...
متن کاملSiderite dissolution in the presence of chromate
Siderite (FeCO3) is an important reduced phase iron mineral and end product of bacteria anaerobic respiration. This study addresses its dissolution behavior in the presence of the oxidant chromate, which is a common environmental contaminant. Macroscopic dissolution experiments combined with microscopic observations by atomic force microscopy show that at pH < 4.5 the dissolution rate with chro...
